The best way to discover both these underrated beaches is to head to Patong Beach, on the western end of the island. While the party-oriented, party-queen atmosphere of the neighboring areas may be appealing to visitors who are in it for the party, Patong offers a much calmer, less-commercialized beach experience. While the nearby pristine beaches like Phuket’s would be the perfect place to relax and recharge your batteries, the safest and most appropriate for beginners and families are the neighboring beaches of Ko Samui and Phi Islands, to the south.
Just east of Phuket is Koh Samui, which also happens to be one of the most well-developed and popular tourists’ spots in all of Thailand. This island inside the archipelago of Koh Phan Ngan is home to some of Thailand’s most gorgeous beaches, including Koh Tao, which boasts a stretch of white sand between the rocky headland of Loai Krathong and the soft sandy beaches of Lamai. In fact, Koh Samui may be more crowded than Phuket, but it offers even more extensive beach coverage.
Ballyholme beach, on the other hand, may be less crowded than its neighboring islands, but it offers equally stunning views. The long stretch of sandy beach along the Ballyholme River is lined with a series of charming little shop houses and cafes, all of which are within walking distance of the beach. In addition to being a great place to spend the day by, Ballyholme beach is also ideal for those who wish to take a dip into the sea. If you don’t fancy swimming, however, it’s still just as perfect for lounging in the sun, away from the crowd.
Few places in the world can boast of the rich culture and history that do characterise Bangkok, Thailand. While the capital city of Thailand is certainly a must-see hotspot, there are some hidden treasures to be uncovered in the less crowded parts of the country. There are plenty of hidden beaches in the north of the island, including ones like Ko Lipe, that are less well known and seen by travelers. In Ko Lipe you can find a quaint rice field that is almost completely hidden from the tourist hordes, which makes for a surprisingly unique experience. Plenty of hidden beaches and trekking routes through the forest can be found in and around the outer banks of the Truk Yai Waterfalls, which is one of the most popular attractions in Phuket, Thailand.
Just a short drive from the sandy beaches of Phuket, Thailand you will find the quiet beauty of Koh Mun Nork. Here you will find a laid-back village atmosphere with a wide variety of restaurants and places to eat. On a clear day you can take a trek up to the pier and into the tropical sunset. Although it is not exactly the most popular beach in Phuket, it is nonetheless a great place to take a break during your stay in Phuket, Thailand. Scuba divers from around the world frequent this calm, shallow beach on a daily basis, but it is not the best place to swim if you are planning to scuba dive in the future. The surrounding coral reefs are also home to numerous fish species and turtles, making the area a great place to explore and photograph.
The beaches of Ko Lipe aren’t as crowded as those in Patong or Pattaya, but they are not exactly deserted either. They are busy with tourists, which makes it a somewhat unpleasant place to visit on a normal vacation. In addition, the island of Ko Lipe isn’t exactly a paradise by any means, but it does have its good points. It is a relatively small island, but has a number of outdoor activities including trekking up to the pier and paddle boarding along its coastline. Its shallow sandy beaches are perfect for snorkeling and watersports and are far from being overcrowded.
